For the first time women represent more than four out of every ten elected councillors across Australia. However, there is still a long way to go to reach parity.
While we can celebrate finally hitting the 40% mark, we need to focus on fast-tracking the path to 50% female representation!
Analysis of the figures show that women’s representation is uneven and has remained static or even fallen in some States.
There are several questions that we need to ask in Australia:
1. Why, when the first woman was elected to local government in Australia way back in 1919, are we still nowhere near parity?
2. Why are many women who get elected, opting not stand for re-election?
3. Why aren’t these figures collated nationally to provide up-to-date data on women in government so that we can analyse it, promote it and try to improve it?
