Mentoring

Mentoring

ALGWA supports women at different stages of their political journey, with peer mentoring for those in the campaigning stage and one on one mentoring for those women who have been successful at local government elections and find themselves to be a newly elected councillor.

One on One Mentoring

Many state branches offer one on one mentoring. To find out more, visit your ALGWA state branch website.

Peer Mentoring

We currently run Peer Mentoring circles for women who are gearing up for elections at all levels of government – local, state and federal - for both regional and metropolitan areas in each state.

We understand that the diversity of our communities should be reflected in the support we provide, so we are also focused on CALD (culturally and linguistically diverse) circles and First Nations circles.

ALGWA’s peer mentoring program is like ALGWA – we are non-partisan.  We welcome women from all political backgrounds and allegiances.

How Peer Mentoring works

The real benefit of our peer mentoring is that you learn and get support not just from your mentor but the other participants who are down in the trenches with you. Your peers in the circle are going through the same thing as you, often at the same time so their understanding is invaluable in terms of advice and support.

Once you identify that you’d like to participate in Peer Mentoring, contact ALGWA and we’ll place you in a peer mentoring circle that best fits your needs.

Your group is then matched to a Mentor with similar experiences to your campaigning needs.  The program is offered on-line with weekly sessions for four weeks covering:

  • You as the candidate
  • Your campaign
  • Communication
  • Next steps in your campaign

We are here every step of the way to support you.  Guided by a Master Mentor, you and your peers can bounce ideas and experiences off each other.

First Nations Mentoring

ALGWA recognised the need for peer mentoring designed and delivered specifically for First Nations women.  This program is being rolled out nation-wide.
